Internet Reliability “Most Common Disruption” to Business, HDTV Offers New Threat

Internet Reliability “Most Common Disruption” to Business, HDTV Offers New Threat
By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Brian_Bradshaw]Brian Bradshaw

The U.S. Department of Labor reports that for the fifth consecutive year the most common disruption to business was the loss of broadband internet connection, with 39 per cent of businesses reporting some kind of failure. In addition, the report concludes that long-term failure could be catastrophic.

Communication requirements for business includes credit card transactions, training, and other mission-critical functions. Business is increasingly reliant on internet communications. Ten years ago, much of this work was done on dedicated satellite communications links. However, increasingly, this transaction is occurring over telephone lines over the internet.

Mission-critical function disruptions cause extreme harm to the business. Such an outage could have serious legal and financial ramifications. Examples could threaten the health and safety of individuals (i. e. hospital systems).

In years past, mission-critical functions were managed with dedicated networks, often via satellite. But today in the U.S., hundreds of satellite communications stations every month are being decommissioned.

Growth of the Internet

Internet traffic continues to grow between 60% and 80% a year (Telecommunications Industry Association (TIA) president Matthew J. Flanigan). “The web infrastructure, and even Google’s, doesn’t scale,” said Vincent Dureau, Google’s Chief Video Technologist.

The current perception is there is a significant excess capacity in carrier networks. This has led to a reduction in investment in optical fiber installation. But according to TIA, this is incorrect. Utilizing data on historical bandwidth drivers, past fiber and equipment usage trends, and an understanding of networks, the system is near its capacity limit. Carriers in the United States are rapidly running out of bandwidth and may face capacity shortages as soon as this year.

The telecommunications sector has been in a recession since 2000. The boom and bust in telecommunications was coincidental with the boom and bust in the “dot-com bubble” of Internet stocks. The dot-coms received most of the publicity, but the telecommunications industry accounted for a larger share of market capitalization gained and lost than the dot-coms. The result has been a technology priced under replacement cost. Competitive technologies have suffered.

The Role of the HDTV Revolution

The rapid adoption of HDTV is a significant force in the system. When Joe Q. Public buys new video equipment, the DVD player’s role in the system is reanalyzed. Many now choose to download movies over the internet instead of using DVD’s. This trend is likely to continue.

“Most of the internet traffic is peer-to-peer, and most of that is video. Every year we have to invest substantially just to maintain the user experience. In fact it (investment) has actually decreased,” Richard Alden, CEO of ONO, a large Spanish Cable Company , told the Cable Europe Congress in Amsterdam.

Despite the relatively small number of users, research indicates that systems such as BitTorrent and YouTube account for more than half of all internet traffic. In 1995 the total amount of data transacted over the Internet backbone was about 1.5 million GB. By 2006, this had grown to over 700 million GB.

Jonathan Arber, a technology analyst with Ovum, said “the problem is that media companies are starting to use these peer-to-peer methods to distribute videos but the internet providers are the ones paying for it.”

ABI Research estimates that the number of video downloads to increase from 215 million in this year (2008) to 2.4 billion in 2012. This number becomes more impressive when one takes into account that a much higher per cent of those downloads in 2012 will be high-definition files, which are much larger (A non High Def DVD movie is approximately 3 GB/Hour, HDTV file size is dependent on encoding: an MPEG-2 (MPEG-2 is the standard used by the DISH Network, MPEG-1 is used by Direct TV) encoded high def movie file size is approximately 9 GB/Hour, an unencoded 1280 X 720 movie file size is over 150 GB/Hour, and an unencoded 1920 X 1080 movie file size is over 350 GB/Hour).

By 2010, forecasts call for 80-90% of internet traffic to be video transfer.

The growth in video downloads could create an internet traffic jam that threatens the net’s development, according to Google. Websites like YouTube (owned by Google) are heightening the problem and new developments will only make the problem worse.

Bandwidth-intensive applications like video download by even a small portion of Internet users may degrade service, and may even crash the Internet, or parts of it (”Broadband Connectivity Competition Policy” FTC Staff Report, 2007).

Investment in the Internet Is Down

The Satellite Business has not been very profitable in recent years. Satellite Business Systems (a Joint Venture of Comsat, IBM, and Aetna) spent more than a billion dollars for a high speed satellite network supply satellite communication to businesses. It was a total business failure.

Currently, the trend is to rely on the fiber internet for business operations. Hundreds of remote stations (the satellite industry refers to the stations as P.E.S. or personal earth stations), are decommissioned every month in the United States. Relying on the local internet (fiber) is cheaper. The main reason that optical fiber is cheaper is that this market was funded (some say over funded) during the dot-com bubble. With the excess supply, prices are dirt cheap.

Carriers may not expand their capital-expenditure budgets, because while a bandwidth shortage is a matter of debate, a capital shortage is not. Telecom companies revenue growth has been poor. Borrowing money to add capacity is difficult in this environment. “Bandwidth brownouts” might do what current industry data seemingly cannot-convince Wall Street that investment is necessary.

“National and state policies toward broadband innovation and deployment directly affect the ability of network operating companies to raise investment funding in the capital markets. To the extent that these policies inject uncertainty into the marketplace, threaten the potential return on infrastructure investments, or interfere with the ability to operate the networks in a way that maximizes capacity and efficiency, such policies would directly and negatively limit the ability of network operating companies to support expanding data traffic on the Internet” (David McClure, US Internet Industry Association).

The outcome of these trends is not clear. The conclusion, that the internet is likely to be overtaxed, has been reached by many, though it seems largely to be a secret outside of academia.

If the bean-counters react in time and significantly increase funding of fiber projects, none of the worst case scenarios is necessary. However prudence would dictate that business planners for mission-critical applications account for the potential of systematic internet unreliability.

Mine was DOA by Electronics nut
I really wanted to like this unit but mine was essentailly DOA. I spent several hours with Netgear tech support and it wouldn’t read networked files nor files from a usb stick directly plugged into the unit. Many other reviews which I have read note Quality Control issues on these units and unfortunatly mine was one of the bad ones too. Netgear tech support gave me a case number and I was able to return mine to Amazon so in the end I just wasted a few hours of my time; if you buy one be sure to set it up ASAP to check for problems while you are still within the tech support and Amazon return windows.

featue-filled entertainment system by Jade C. Geronimo
Pros: Fast user interface with plenty of cool features aside from playing audio/movies/etc - can check weather, rss feed, remote access on computer messaging to network. Much preferred over my old system (dlink medialounge).

Cons: Crashed on me once or twice. The indexing takes a bit of time if you have lots of files to upload. The photos take awhile to load. Does not support .mov files and has some issues playing mpg4.

Overall my preferred network entertainment systme to play media from computer.

EVA8000 After 1 Month - Good, not Great, but what is better? by SkykingUSA
It’s really more of a 3.75, but definitely not a 4, so I had to rate it a 3.

I have had my EVA for about 4 weeks. I have had pretty mixed results when watching video files. The device either locks up or reboots itself at 2-3 times per week, which I am not happy about. It seems to give me the best performance when I am watching a ripped DVD (using DVD Shrink with no compression). Watching a ripped DVD starts playing faster than other file types and also fast forwards, rewinds and skips to chapters faster. It seems as if it does not buffer the vobs - it starts so quickly and doesn’t give the buffering message I get with other file types. Most of my non-dvd rips are avi files with xvid, but I also tried h.264 in avi and mkv with limited success. many times the h.264 video is “shaky”, but I suspect it may be more due to my encoding capabilities than any fault of the eva.

I have all my files on a Linksys NSLU2 NAS device. Two 1 TB drives are connected (mirrored). I have upgraded to the current beta EVA Firmware which I highly recommend. I installed the 1.8.0022 DEW originally, and it kept saying it could not be found when I try to watch YouTube video or control my PC. Then I installed DEW 1.8.0028 thinking that would solve my problem, but it did not. I finally got YouTube video to work after upgrading the firmware and selecting the play directly option so I do not need to have the PC running to play YouTube anymore. My pc is running Windows Vista Ultimate with SP1, Firewall turned off.

I stream mostly video. I bought the eva to watch tv shows I download from Europe because they are not broadcast here in the USA. Mostly racing videos and racing tv shows. I also use it to watch DVD rips and movie files which are mostly avi files using Xvid.

I have a Netgear Wireless G router, but I have the EVA connected via 100Mbps Ethernet. Only thing I did, was set up 5 different shares on my NAS for the EVA, only 1 of them is Read/Write which is used for the EVA to write its library to. Three others contain video or audio or pictures. The last one is the “adult” share which is password protected in the EVA settings so visitors do not accidentally stumble on things they should not.

I really wish there was a comprehensive manual for the device explaining what all the settings do and when they should be used. Especially, since the manual was written many months before the latest firmware. There is a good one in Netgears forums, but still not all inclusive.

Overall, I am disappointed in the stability of the device, but I feel stuck with it because I don’t know of anything better that isn’t a Windows Media Extender - I don’t want to have to run a PC to get my video to the TV room. I just wish the device were more stable and the PC Control would work as advertised (PC Control has never worked for me because it can never find my PC on the network, even with the required software installed on the PC). Prepare to spend time searching through the Netgear forums and to join the beta forum to get the latest firmware updates - they are worth it. The Netgear EVA8000 forum is definitely a good source of help, and the Netgear moderators there are helpful and try to address your problems if you post according to the rules and give some detail.

It’s like being stuck in a dead end job, but you can’t leave yet because you can’t afford to. I feel stuck with a buggy product, but it’s still the best I have researched, and the basic functionality does work, so I have to just shut up and take it. I really like Netgear products overall and have used their routers etc., but this product is not for the faint of heart when it comes to tech research and troubleshooting.

Beats the competition! by BocaDude
After struggling with a D-link DPG-1200 and the worthless tech support (hours wasted on the phone, pushed from one level tech to another, only to be told hours later to CALL BACK!) Then they wanted to charge me $49.00 for the support I would need to get the thing up and running! All this on the FIRST day I got it! So I quickly returned it and took a chance with the Netgear EVA-8000.
The Netgear EVA-8000 was easy to hook up to my network running windows XP and wireless network with full encryption. The user interface was easy to use and everything hooked up and worked the first time out. Instructions were easy to follow and simple for a non-geek like me who wanted to bring multimedia from my pc to my widescreen using a wireless device. One of the best features I found with this item is the ability to use the included HDMI port and cable to make the hookup to my TV, therefore giving me excellent picture and sound quality in one cable. There are some other hookup choices also, if you don’t have HDMI on your TV, but the picture quality might not be as good as with the HDMI. I am using 1080p, but the device lets you chose the quality of your set. Once everything is hooked up and running, which was fast, simple and easy to do, you can get the latest firmware and updates right from the TV screen menus. The actual dimensions of the device itself is larger in size than I would have thought (length and width), height is only a few inches, but for a unit that works so great, who cares!
This type of unit does not actually bring your “desktop” itself to the TV screen, but rather the software uses has its own interface for use on your set, with a remote control, that lets you control just about every aspect of viewing. Kind of like my Tivo remote.
The manual (available for download or hard copy in the box) is quit extensive, and that was my first hint that this product might actually work great, obviously a lot of time an effort went into the making of this device.
You can do such things as watch recorded media, view photos, record TV, play music and more, all from your PC folders, and you can also watch and browse you tube from your TV! You chose the folders you want to share in the easy setup screens.
I highly recommend the EVA-8000, especially if you have an HDMI port on your TV, and by the way, an HDMI cable IS included, even though they say it is not included.

Lots of Limitations and uncertain future but I still keep it with me by Ricardo Remis

After more than a year with my EVA this product could be your dream machine or your worst nightmare depending for what you want it for:
Let’s make it simple

This product is good for you if…
- You’d like to watch You Tube in your big screen TV
- You’d like to hear your big collection of Music you have in your PC (even I tunes..yes)
- You’d like to sit with your whole family and watch your pictures and videos you have stored in your PC in almost any available format
- You’d like to hear Internet Radio trough your TV
- You’d like to read your RSS feeds in your TV

This product is not good for you if..
- You would like to record your TV shows trough your PC and watch it on your TV. Simply impossible. Buy a PSP3 instead
- You’d like to watch Internet TV.
- You’d like to be connected to an UNPN server like ORB. Will not work.
- You’d like to play the “new” Dvr-ms video format from Microsoft.
- You are expecting to buy a product totally (or reasonable) stable.
- You are expecting to buy the Center Unit of your Home Entertainment System

Why I still keep it? In my case, Pros are more than cons. I’ve been always an early adopter of new technology and I enjoy to be part of it. If you buy it, download regularly Netgear’s beta software and who knows, in few months more you can have a better product.

How to Make a Decision Using a Quantitative Scoring System

Life involves making a lot of decisions. In fact, one of the decisions you have to make right now is “Should I finish reading this whitepaper or shouldn’t I?”
So why not learn to make the best decision, or at least a good one every time? While making a decision based on your “gut instinct” works often, occasionally, a simple quantitative scoring system can provide additional insights and often help you overcome an emotional decision that you will later be unable to justify logically.
This method will help you quantify your values and make fast decisions between alternatives. It applies to everything from which mortgage professional should I choose to which car should I buy.

Steps

  1. Write the question you’re trying to decide, e.g. “Which mortgage professional should I choose?”
  2. Write up five to six “must-have qualities:” For example:
    1. Integrity (What he/she says is consistent with what he/she does),
    2. Professional Knowledge and Expertise (Makes Recommendations consistent with what I value),
    3. Quality of Communication (Helps me understand quickly),
    4. Accessibility (I can reach them when I need them),
    5. Competitive Pricing (Rates and Costs are amongst the best in the marketplace), and
    6. Reliability of recommendations (Shows me that live market data is consistent with recommendations so I can make a timely decision to choose them).
  3. Rate the importance of each of these qualities on a scale of 1 to 10 in terms of how important each is to you (e.g. if reliability is far more important than anything, it gets a 10, if Competitive Pricing is the second most important but really not nearly as important as reliability you might give it a 5 or 6, and so on).
  4. List your options (e.g. Bank Loan Officer, Realtor Referred, my current Loan Broker, etc.).
  5. Provide a score on a scale of 1 to 10 for each quality you put down for that option. Do this for all options you put down (e.g. If your current Loan Broker rates high with you, give him/her an 8′ if you think they are average, give them a 5). This is a subjective scale, so it’s up to you to score it as honestly as possible to make the best decision by the end of this.
  6. Compute scores for each option by multiplying the quality score you gave your option with your target quality score, the one you created in Step 3 (e.g. your Loan Broker is 56: 8 [the importance of Integrity] x 7 [how well you rate them in that area]). Do this for all qualities listed in all your separate options.
  7. Sum up the scores for each quality for a total score for that option. Do this separately for all options you listed.
  8. Compute your target score by creating an option that encompasses the scores for the qualities you most value.
  9. Divide each option’s total score by your target score and multiply by 100 to get a total. The option with the highest percentile score (compared to your target) is your best choice.

Sample Calculation

Here is a sample completed for selecting the most compatible romantic partner using the Quantitave Scoring System. Six qualities were scored for the potential suitor on a scale of 1-10.
Example:
My Ideal Loan Professional
Integrity = 10 (10*10=100)
Communication= 9 (9*9=81)
Competitive= 8 (8*8=64)
Accessibility= 6 (6*6=36)
Reliability= 6 (6*6=36)
Expertise= 9 (9*9=81)
Prospective Loan Professional
(Option A)
Integrity= 8 (8*9=72)
Communication= 4 (4*10=40)
Competitive= 7 (7*8=56)
Accessibility= 6 (6*6=36)
Reliability= 6 (6*6=36)
Expertise= 3 (3*9=27)
Current Loan Broker
(Option B)
Integrity= 9 (9*9=81)
Communication= 10 (10*10=100)
Competitive= 9 (9*8=72)
Accessibility= 8 (8*6=48)
Reliability= 6 (6*6=36)
Expertise= 10 (10*9=90)
Target total score:
100+81+64+36+36+81=398
Option A’s total score:
72+40+56+36+36+27=267
Percentage this option fits your target:
(267/398) * 100 = 67%
Option B’s total score:
81+100+72+48+36+90=427
Percentage this option fits your target:
(427/398) * 100 = 107%
Option A fits my target quality score at 67% while Option B surpasses my target quality score at 107%.

Tips

  • If you get a best choice that really surprises you or doesn’t feel right, consider re-scoring your qualities and ratings; perhaps you didn’t really list what was important to you, or give it the right weight. This process helps you quantify and understand your feelings regarding your options.
  • If all the options score poorly (below 70%), then something has to change before an acceptable decision can be made! In such a case, your current options do not adequately meet your standards, which means either that you need better options or that your expectations are not realistic.
  • If you use an Excel spreadsheet to carry on the calculations, rankings, narrative explanations of your reasoning, etc., it becomes very easy to use the same template, revised by exception, to guide all your future decisions.
  • The same system may be modified to allow the offset for negative qualities by multiplying by a negative one to allow for negative effects on the overall scoring.
  • If you have more than six qualities, the value of the score can get diluted, so think hard about what really matters to you. Leave the nice-to-have qualities aside, or you might get distracted and make a decision based on unimportant factors. Make sure the qualities are non-overlapping otherwise you essentially double-count the same underlying attribute.

For those that are throwing money away… throw some my direction. by T. Pavey
Following my review here is the HDMI spec currently which supports the full color depth..notice the bandwidth. Therefore… any cable that you buy that says HDMI 1.3 Category 2 can do *gasp* 10.2 Gbit/s (340MHz) bandwidth. Amazon here has plenty for less than 1 tenth of this and a quick search at my favorite place to buy cables would let me buy $30 for the price of one of these.

Also, money does not equal quality when it comes to cables. I got some high quality Monster cables in a set a number of years ago (big time clearance and it was all the store carried and I wanted it that day). The first time I went to move three of the RCA ends on 2 different style cable stayed inside my amp when I pulled them straight back. I have used probably 100 different RCA, digital coax, and component video cables and Monster brand are the only ones I’ve ever had break.

So again, if you like paying $100 for something the company makes for $5, I’d rather you just send me the $95 if you really don’t need it that bad. I have 6 HDMI cables hooked up right now… so at a savings of $95 per cable that is $570…which payed for my PS3 and an extra game. When it comes to digital… it just plain does not matter.

I felt like i needed it by Joe Velazquez
I bought a monster 500 cable for $80 at the Navay Exchange when i purchased my Sony 46 Bravia TV. Some months later I searched on EBAY and I found out that i can get this cable for a lot cheaper then what i paid for the 500. I now have 3 of these in my house for my girlfriend’s PS3 and 360 in the living room and my PS3 in the bedroom. I left the 500 hooked up to the cable box. The only thing i have compared this product to was the original av cables which suck due to the fuzzyness. I love the picture quality and sound that i get from the Monster Ultra and if i am able to afford a $1800 tv, Yamaha Surround sound, then i can afford these cables.

If you look on the monster website, it will tell you what cable is recomended for each system.

Great Product with Excellant Price. by Mickey
The cables are really good. I wouldn’t have got a better deal than this one.

The same cable costs 50% more at Circuit City.

Nice cable. by Kelly Van Rijn
What are we talking about here? A cable. It works fine, but I know I paid too much for it, just as you will always pay a premium for ‘Monster’ branded products.

Why take a chance??? by vraMD
I just spent $2500 on a top of the line Samsung 52 inch 1080p LCD, and I also got this cord of $99. Myabe Monster is better. Maybe it isn’t. But there is no shot I’m taking a chance with a $5 or $10 dollar cord. Especially when people out there say they notice a difference. Even if I got ripped off, which may be the case, the extra 90 bucks is worth my piece of mind.

LCD Flat Screen TV - 7 Things to Consider When Buying LCD Flat Screen TV Online

LCD Flat Screen TV - 7 Things to Consider When Buying LCD Flat Screen TV Online
By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Jared_Dawson]Jared Dawson

So you have been thinking about the purchase of an LCD Flat Screen Tv.

In days past the choices on where to purchase highly regarded home theater equipment was pretty limited. If you were lucky enough to live near a big city you had several specialty electronics stores to choose from. If you lived in suburban America you had one or two big name electronics stores, while if you lived in rural America you were sometimes out of luck until you made an excursion out to the “big city”.

Today, that has all changed with the arrival of the Internet. Anyone with access to the Internet now has access to a gigantic specialty electronics store right in their own home. Practically any LCD flat screen tv known to mankind can be purchase online with the click of a few buttons.

While the choices are limitless, it is more important then ever to do your research and become a smart consumer. The following 7 things will help you be an educated consumer and help you get the best bang for your hard earned buck.

1. What size tv do you need? - Know the size of your room and how much space you have available, but also know what is the best size for optimum viewing. If you sit to close you take the risk of noticing scan lines or pixels, but sit too far away and you begin to lose out on picture details and the immersive feel of a wide screen tv. It is recommended that you can sit anywhere between 1.5 and 3 times your HDTV screen size for the best viewing experience. So for a viewing distance of 8 feet (96inches) you would want an LCD that is at least 32 inches, but not more then 63inches. If your viewing distance was 12 feet (144 inches) you would want a screen size with a minimum of 46 inches and a maximum of 96 inches for the best viewing experience.

2. Know what features are important - Most people are going to want a 1080p tv, but what about contrast ratio, response times and refresh rates. Do you watch sports or movies with a lot of fast action? If you do then you will want something with low response times and may want to consider a 120Hz LCD for smooth motion. Is the look of the tv important. Some manufacturers have begun releasing LCDs with stylish bezels where the tv looks great when turned off as well as on. Some people will say that one of the disadvantages of shopping online is that you don’t have the benefit of a helpful salesperson to guide you through the buying process. While that may be true of a specialty home theater store I would argue that you can get much more helpful information by doing a little research yourself online then you can from listening to some of the downright bad advice that is shared in some of the big electronic chain stores.

3. Price - Lets face it, the biggest advantage of buying online by far is the price. The local brick and mortar stores with there overhead costs simply can’t match some of the prices that can be found online for the same exact LCD flat screen tv. But prices can also vary greatly from one online retailer to another. When you compare price make sure to take all things into consideration such as shipping fees and taxes when determining the actual cost of the LCD. The price savings can be significant, particularly on the mid to high end displays. At the same time, you can’t simply rely on price alone when buying an LCD online which brings us to the next consideration.

4. Company reputation - Make sure the retailer is reliable. What good is it to save a bundle of money on a new tv only to find out that the retailer is shipping faulty products. Is there a company phone number to contact with questions? Is the site professional? Are all transactions placed on a secure connection? Have you heard of the retailer before? Check out customer rankings and reviews online. A good, reliable site will allow customers to place reviews of the product, but also of the service that they received from the retailer.

5. Return policy - Another extremely important consideration for buying an LCD tv online is what is the return policy? If the tv is damaged will they return it, no questions asked? If so, who is responsible for the shipping fee? Will they pay shipping or are you responsible for shipping? What if you want to exchange the tv? One of the things about going into a store is that you can actually take a look at the tv. What if you order the LCD, get it sent home and then realize it is not what you were expecting? Can you exchange the tv and if so what is the restocking fee if any? An upfront knowledge of the return policy is essential when purchasing an LCD online. The good online retailers will have a return fee that is as good or better then many of the brick and mortar stores.

6. Shipping - It is important to understand several things about shipping. What are the shipping costs? Will the product get damaged in shipping and if so who is responsible. Some people feel that there is a much greater chance of receiving a damaged product when buying online and having it shipped, however many times there is less handling of a tv from a large online retailer who ships the tv from their warehouse then there is in some of the local stores where tvs are shipped from one warehouse to another until it eventually enters the stores warehouse and then delivered to your home. Is white glove delivery available to bring the LCD directly into your home? Can you have someone setup the tv for you and if so what is the cost.

7. What about cables, accessories and extended warranties? - Cables, accessories and extended warranties have long been a major profit center for the brick and mortar stores. Do you ever notice how the sales personnel seem to save there most passionate sales pitches for the extended warranties? Many times that is when they have the opportunity to earn a larger commission based on the warranty sales. Today’s flat panel LCD tvs are much more reliable then in years past and it is generally not worth the extra cost of an extended warranty. Not to mention cables. Stores often push the sales of overpriced cables saying that you need them in order to get a quality video and audio experience. These cables are one of the areas where a store can make a lot of money. The truth is that there is very little difference between cables, particularly the digital cable such as HDMI. Local stores won’t carry the discount cables, so ordering cables online is a perfect way to save a great deal of money.

Buying an LCD flat screen tv online is a great way to get a high quality tv and save a lot of money at the same time. With a little bit of online research you can buy that perfect tv from a reliable retailer and have it conveniently shipped home where you and your family will be able to enjoy the latest movie release or sports event on your new big screen tv.

How to Wire a Plasma TV

Most people would give up when it comes to wiring a plasma TV. Although it may seem like a very difficult thing to do, it’s not. These clearly defined steps will save you time and money. You will also learn a lot by doing it yourself. Make sure you have all the necessary components and accessories needed before you start wiring.

Steps

  1. Place all the components, TV, speakers, etc. where you want them. Don’t worry yet about how to wire them.
  2. You may want to turn all equipment sideways on the shelves so you can get to the connections in the back.
  3. Plug in all the power cords into a power strip, but don’t turn on the strip until you are all done.
  4. Learn to differentiate audio and video. Video connections are often yellow, audio connections are often Red and White, but newer systems can have more varieties. You’ll need to make sure the color you are plugging in is the same for both ends of the cable.
  5. Start wiring all the cables. You can see that all the cables and connections are clearly labeled and color-coded.
  6. Use the concept of ’signal path’ to connect the necessary OUT’s to IN’s. Cables are needed to give the signal a path to travel from one piece of equipment to another. OUT of the antenna, IN to the VCR. OUT of the DVD player, IN to the TV. OUT of the receiver, IN to the speakers etc.
  7. Turn everything on. If necessary, switch channels and settings to match the labels on the connections you’ve just made. Enjoy!

Tips

  • Upgrade your audio & video cables; remember your picture is only as good as your cables can transmit.
  • To fully appreciate the high definition picture that your plasma television is capable of, use Component cables (RGB) will give you a good picture, but HDMI and DVI cables will provide much better picture quality. The HDMI cable, however, will also transmit the audio signal.
  • Make sure all connections are nice and secure.
  • Make use of all the links and diagrams included.

Warnings

  • Don’t waste money buying super cheap cables, or super expensive cables. Moderately priced cables should be perfectly fine for most residential installations.
  • Make sure you never place plasma TV facing flat on the ground.
  • Do not install plasma TV near any heat source.
  • Don’t leave any still images on a plasma screen for extended periods of time. This will cause the image to burn in.
  • Never clean your screen with abrasive cleansers. Go to an electronics store and purchase a screen cleaning kit.

Things You’ll Need

  • Monster Component Video Cables
  • BNC Cable
  • HDTV Tuner/Receiver (if not already built in)
  • Digital Cable Receiver
  • DVI/HDMI cables
  • Antenna (to watch local channels)
  • Receiver (for hooking up surround sound)
  • Power source (for clean and pure connection)
  • HD DVD player (for high definition movies)
  • 5.1 surround speakers
  • Monster speaker wires (better quality sound)
  • Wall mounts

Great receiver! by Anton B. Fedorov
Got it on amazon to build my home theater around it. Upscaling and upconversion rules. A little bit hard to control, but it definitely worth the money. Highly recommend to anybody. After all, do you REALLY need those 800$+ pieces of equipment?

HDMI problem by David Seelye
First I have to say this is a nice receiver/amp for a technical person. The amp allows you to re-map video to audio ports, it has plenty of ins and outs for connecting gear. Sound quality is grat and the auto setup feature does a good job of setting levels and EQ. The other settings are not accessed intuitively. The manual is not clear on how to access the units settings. Maybe it is just me but I had to read the same section 4 times and paw through manual to figure out how to access common settings.

The problem I am having is with the HDMI out. I have a 720×480 Samsung DVD-R connected to the component, and optical audio inputs on the amp. The amp is connected to my new 46″ Samsung 650 1080p 120hz HDTV. While watching, the image flashes between low and high brightness at varying rates between about 0.5 and 4 seconds. If I switch to component video on the amp, all the problems disappear. This is very annoying considering how great HDMI is supposed to be and how much I paid for the system

All evidence points to the Component to HDMI conversion in the amp. I will probably keep the amp in hopes that I can find a fix for this issue and keep using Component video until I get a blue-ray player.

Recommend you buy something else until Yamaha corrects this issue, or can tell folks how to avoid it in the settings.

Doesn’t pass BTB (blacker than black) HDMI video by Sanity Stream
Only AFTER I buy this do I discover the Yamaha “clips” the HDMI video signal — meaning it can’t do the full range of 0-255, instead clipping it to 16-235 and losing Blacker than Black and Whiter than White, which some TVs can handle. If you use a PS3, then you’ve seen the “Full” or “Limited” video option. This basically takes away the “Full” option. I think this is absurd and I can’t believe Yamaha has allowed it to happen. Other receivers from other manufacturers DO pass the full 0-255 video signal. But don’t just take my word for it, there are whole threads about this problem in places like AVSForum. Check them out before buying.

What a difference! by David N. Jorn
Originally purchased the Onkyo 705 and it sounded good for a while and then all of its issues came out. I plugged this Yamaha into the same setup and WOW! The sound that this Yamaha puts out is so clear. The Onkyo at its best is not even close. The onkyo needs 8 inches of space above the receiver in order to not burn up. I have less then 2 inches of space above this receiver and it still runs extremely cool. A Yamaha fan for life now!

Pop-Up Tents - Traveling Light Made Simple

Pop-Up Tents - Traveling Light Made Simple
By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Warren_Smith]Warren Smith

For the true outdoorsman, only tenting will do. Forget the RV. Getting in touch with nature means leaving the microwave and HDTV at home. There’s nothing better than listening to crickets chirping in the stillness while you’re inside a great canvas tent. Whether your tent is a pop-up or other type, tenting is one of the best ways to commune with the environment.

Unfortunately, some people still have the outdated image of the bulky, circus-style tents of yesteryear. Unwieldy steel poles and the sheer weight of the canvas discouraged some from even trying camping. Luckily, camping technology has come a long way. Today’s tents are lightweight, but sturdy. Plus, you don’t have to be a rocket scientist to put one up. Pop-up tents are exceptionally easy and convenient to use. They can even be assembled by one person.

Pop-up tents are exactly what the name implies. They are erected by pushing poles through fabric channels. They’re so simple, in fact, that they are often referred to as “self-erecting” tents. The poles are typically made of light, flexible materials, making them nearly foolproof to work with.

Pop-up tents are designed to be extremely compact. The poles usually break down to shorter lengths. They may separate completely to create shorter sections. They may also “fold” down via a cord that runs inside the hollow tube that comprises the pole. The fabric itself folds easily. Pop-up tents are the perfect choice for a tenting excursion that includes a hike. Compact and light, they add only minimal weight to a backpack. They’re also a good choice when space is limited, such as when being transported in a smaller vehicle.

When choosing a pop-up tent, there are two main factors to consider: size and camping conditions. First, decide on size. How many people will likely be sleeping in the tent at one time? It’s important to read labels carefully. Pop-up tents may sleep anywhere from one to eight people. The label will tell you exactly how many people it was made to hold. However, you may need to make some adjustments. For example, a tent that says it sleeps “four” generally refers to four average-sized adults. A family of two adults and three small children may still fit comfortably inside. Similarly, a tent for “four” may not be big enough for four tall men. Always check the dimensions of the tent along with the number of people it sleeps to get a more accurate gauge of size.

Next, in what type of conditions will you be using your tent? For example, if you frequently camp on windy mountaintops, you should avoid hoop tents. Hoop tents may not be strong enough to withstand a powerful wind. Instead, they are ideal for backyard camping or for use in enclosed campgrounds. Ridge tents are a good choice for backpacking trips, offering headroom without bulk. For trips when space isn’t an issue, frame tents are an excellent selection. They work well for families and have ample interior space.

No matter what the style, pop-up tents are a breeze to erect. Even the least mechanically-inclined of campers will have no trouble enjoying the great outdoors with a self-erecting tent.

Buy Big Screen TVs Online For Cheap

Buy Big Screen TVs Online For Cheap
By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Kyle_Evans]Kyle Evans

It’s summer time and hot! Too hot to be outside right now, so most people are staying indoors and watching a lot of television. Now is the perfect time to buy big screen TVs. You can buy them for fairly cheap and stay inside from the summer heat to play with your new toy. You will also have it ready for later in the year when it comes time for football season!

Picking a TV can seem like a hard choice since there are so many options available though. Here is some basic info about the types of TV sets available, and a brief look at this season’s best selling big screen TVs.

First of all you need to decide if you want a flat screen or a rear-projection TV. Flat-panel screens are getting more popular everyday due to their size. These are the ones that are so thin you can even hang them on your wall. Ultra cool! But they are the most expensive option and only get up to a certain size (if it was too big it would fall off the wall!). The other option is a rear-projection TV. You can get them in whatever size you want, but they are much thicker so you will not be able to hang them on the wall. Rear-projection TVs are usually cheaper, but the picture quality is incredible for both types of sets. I would choose what is best for you based on price and available space.

Once you decide what type of set to buy, you need to decide on the specific big screen TV you want to buy. This season Samsung is definitely the hottest brand available. They have stiff competition with other popular brands like Sony and keep advancing their technology. At Amazon right now, the most popular big screen TV is the Samsung LN46A550. This 46″ LCD HDTV has great bang for the buck. Samsung also has many other TVs in the top 10 list, while Sony, Sharp, and Panasonic are quite popular too. There are lots of great quality, cheap big screen TVs available, and now is definitely the time to buy.

If you want to buy cheap [http://www.squidoo.com/BuyBigScreenTVs]big screen TVs then you should check out all the deals available online. You don’t have to go to the store and go through tedious searches and payment plans. You can do your research online and decide on the perfect TV for you and it will get shipped right to your house. If you are looking for a great deal then head on over to [http://www.squidoo.com/BuyBigScreenTVs]my website where I share some more information and a review of the most popular big screen TVs available online.
