Works perfectly by J. Haas
Excellent conversion cable. Some HD projectors/TVs accept the composite signal via connector that looks like a VGA one from a PC. This allows you to come out of the DVD player or other video source using 3 component plugs and go to the VGA style input on the projector. Works great.

Great product. by PPya
I have a HD compatible projector and this cable helped me connect my blu-ray to the projector and the picture quality is just great.
I’d recommend this to anyone with a HD compatible projector or tv.

Is it Worth Buying a New Television?

Is it Worth Buying a New Television?
By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Keith_Barrett]Keith Barrett

When we come to make a new purchase for our homes, we often have to try and strike the right balance between buying nice new products and trying to stick within budget. When is the right time to buy a new television?

It’s sometimes fairly obvious when the time is right to make a new purchase. My last television set eventually gave up working after about four years.

The problems started with the colours on the screen getting distorted and continued with various other unwanted effects that were altering the picture.

As with most new television sets in the UK, it had come with a year’s warranty. I hadn’t extended the warranty - I generally never do, since I always wonder if extended warranties offer real value for money.

I thought that four years wasn’t too bad, although I was slightly disappointed. I hadn’t paid an enormous amount for the original TV, but it would have been nice if it had lasted a year or two longer.

It was obvious to me that I would need a new television. As I started to shop around, both online and in a number of high street stores, it soon became clear to me that the complexities of buying a television had changed considerably in the previous four years.

The rise of Freeview and the appearance of High Definition televisions (HDTV) has certainly changed the market. It was now possible to buy sets that included integrated digital receivers.

Since I already had a separate digital box, I wasn’t too worried about getting an integrated model. I was, however, impressed with the new HD models that were on the market.

Many of them seem to be coming down in price quite quickly - I was particularly surprised at how much better the picture quality was.

I eventually opted for a model from Panasonic that had been reduced in price. I’m pleased to say that I’ve not been disappointed with my purchase.

Is it time for you to buy a new TV?

HDTV Downloads Future Threatens Internet and Hollywood

HDTV Downloads Future Threatens Internet and Hollywood
By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Brian_Bradshaw]Brian Bradshaw

The technologies of television and the internet are converging. This trend has been obvious for ten years. The rapid adoption of HDTV is currently driving the growth. Most customers of a fine video system want to take advantage of the associated benefits, including high definition audio, and merging their computer systems with the theater.

The primary forces impacting this trend include internet capacity constraints caused by video download demand, property rights of the movie producers (and the technical solutions), and an analysis of the who is likely to reap the financial windfall from it all.

Do We have the Internet Bandwidth to Support Downloaded Movies?

According to Google, the popularity of video downloads, especially High-Def downloads, could overwhelm internet bandwidth capacity. Services such as YouTube (owned by Google) are problematic, and new developments could create even more problems.

Joshua Danovitz, general manager and vice-president international for TiVo, said the issue of download limits differs in each country. In the United States and Asia, where bandwidth capacity is still available, users have few constraints (though not truly unlimited), while other countries, including Canada, ISPs are restricting users to some degree. The problem will only get worse with the increased popularity of video downloads. Currently, more than half of internet bandwidth utilization in the United States is peer to peer, and most of that is video download.

Time Warner said that it was going to start testing a new rate plan in Beaumont (Texas) that would limit the amount of bandwidth each customer can use each month before additional charges applied. New plans would offer between 5 gigabytes and 40 gigabytes of download a month. The top plan would cost roughly the same as the company’s highest-speed service ($50 and $60 a month).

Time Warner wants to test bandwidth limits to crack down on a minority of customers who are heavy downloaders. Only five percent of Time Warner’s customers use over half of its total bandwidth.

Bell Canada has imposed bandwidth limits on its customers. Bell Canada charges as much as $7.50 for each gigabyte when customers exceed the 30-gigabyte limit on a plan that costs about $30 a month. Since the average high-definition movie is 4 gigabytes to 5 gigabytes, that would mean a charge of at least $30 a download for customers on a plan like that who were over their limit.

On more expensive plans, the over-limit charges at Bell Canada are as low as $1 a gigabyte. That would represent a $4 to $5 charge for an HD movie for people over their monthly limits. Standard-definition movies are typically 1 gigabyte to 2 gigabytes.

A lot of the movies are not downloaded from authorized vendors.

Property Control (reference: Downloaded Music)

One fifth of U.S. citizens have pirated a major film and two thirds of this group have downloaded a film at least monthly. 80% of overall movie downloaders use unauthorized services to get their movies for free, as opposed to using a legal solution. The RIAA and MPAA have already resorted to legal action against thousands of U.S. citizens.

If we assume a parallel path with the audio recording industry, then the business implications are huge. MP3 players have now been around for about 10 years. Audio CD sales are down about 15% last year, 20% in 2006. The best estimate is that only about 42% of music acquisitions being paid. NPD (a retail tracking group) estimates that one million consumers “dropped out of the CD buyer market” in 2007, a trend led by teenagers, 48% of whom did not purchase a single CD in 2007.

Thomson is exploring methods for preventing bootlegging by the covert camcorder user. The company’s technique involves inserting “artifacts” (extra frames, flashes of light, pixelated grid patterns, etc.) into the movie before it’s shipped to theaters. The idea is to mark a camcorder recording without degrading the images moviegoers see.

The artifacts exploit the differences in the way a human brain and a camcorder receive images. In the technique that’s furthest along, extra frames with the words like “Pirated Copy, You Are Scum” are inserted into the frame. These warning words appear at a frequency too fast for the human brain to process, but they will appear in a camcorder recording.

From a technical standpoint, it is probably impossible to completely prevent users from making copies of the media they purchase, as long as a “writer” is available that can write to blank media. The basic technical fact is that all types of media require a player. The player has to be able to read the media in order to display it to a human, then a player could be built that first reads the media, and then writes out an exact copy of what was read.

In practice, almost-perfect copies can typically be made by tapping into the analog output of a player (e.g. the speaker output or headphone jacks) and, once redigitized into an unprotected form, duplicated.

Since these basic technical facts exist, it follows that a determined individual will definitely succeed in copying any media, given enough time and resources. Media publishers understand this; copy protection is not intended to stop professional operations involved in the unauthorized mass duplication of media, but rather to stop “casual copying”.

Copying of media which is downloaded (rather than being mass-duplicated as with physical media) can be inexpensively customized for each download, and thus restricted more effectively. They can be encrypted in a fashion which is unique for each user’s computer, and the decryption system can be made tamper-resistant.

Publishers of music and movies have turned to encryption to make copying more difficult. CSS is a form of copy protection that uses 40-bit encryption. Copies will not be playable since they will be missing the key, which is not writable on DVD-R or DVD-RW discs. The work is encrypted using a key only included in the firmware of authorized players, which allow only legitimate uses of the work (usually restricted forms of playback, but no conversion or modification).

The Digital Millennium Copyright Act would make it illegal to distribute unauthorized players was supposed to eliminate the possibility of building a DVD copier. However, encryption schemes designed for mass-market standardized media such as DVD suffer from the fundamental weakness that once implemented, they can never be changed without breaking the standard. Manufacturers have been prevented from enhancing their DRM technology until recently, with the release of next-generation media such as HD DVD and Blu-ray Disc. This period represents more than enough time for the encryption scheme to be defeated by determined attackers. For example, the CSS encryption system used on DVD Video was broken within three years of its market release in November 1996 (see DeCSS), but has not been changed since, because doing so would immediately render all DVD players sold prior to the change incapable of reading new DVDs. This would not only provoke a furious backlash amongst consumers. More recent DVDs have attempted to augment CSS with additional protection schemes. Most modern schemes like ARccOS Protection use tricks of the DVD format in an attempt to trip up pirating programs, though it is noted that any scheme must stay within the bounds of the DVD Video format, limiting the possible avenues of protection and making it easier for hackers to learn the details of the scheme and find ways around it.

HD DVD and Blu-ray Disc, attempt to address this issue. Both formats employ the Advanced Access Content System (AACS), which provides for several hundred different encryption keys, each of which can be invalidated should one of the keys be compromised. Revoked keys simply will not appear on recorded discs, rendering the compromised players useless for future titles unless they are updated to fix the issue. For this reason, all HD-DVD players and some Blu-ray players include an ethernet port, so that they can download updates. Blu-ray Disc goes one step further with a separate technique called BD+, a virtual machine that can execute code included on discs to verify, authorize, revoke, and update players as the need arises. Since the protection program is on the disc rather than the player, this allows for updating protection programs within BD’s working life by simply having updated programs included on newer discs.

The Rich Get Richer

Everyone from Apple and Microsoft, and smaller companies such as TiVo and Netflix, are marketing their version of the “digital living room”. Since the software is the most challenging (read value add) component of these systems, the author believes companies with a track record of success in the software arena are likely to end up on top.

These home theater systems are basically PCs designed to be connected to home theater systems. One benefit is the ability to access and use all your home media files in the living room, on the big screen. These systems have been popular for dire hard enthusiasts, but are only now becoming mainstream.

Microsoft

Windows Media Center (included on premium editions of Windows Vista, Vista Home Premium and Vista Ultimate) is critical in Microsoft’s vision of the digital lifestyle that the company aims to push as a standard of entertainment for consumers. This in the context of the intimate connection between the Windows client and Windows Media Center, but also because of Microsoft’s strategy focused on connected entertainment.

With the addition of a TV tuner card, Media Center can play back and record TV shows from a High-definition TV, Digital Cable (1080i Premium HDTV), standard antenna, cable, or satellite signal.

Like TiVo, Windows Media Center allows fast-forwarding through commercials of recorded programs. Some users deliberately wait 10-15 minutes to start watching a program in the live buffer so they can fast-forward through the commercials and catch up to “live TV” by the end of the program.

Commercials can be skipped automatically (not supported by Microsoft) by installing external plug-ins like DVRMSToolbox or Lifextender.

The problems that Microsoft Vista has experienced are well documented, but buggy software has never prevented Microsoft from dominating other software applications.

Our Recommendation: use XP MCE until Vista gets the bugs worked out.

Apple

Owners of the Apple TV set-top box are able to rent movies directly from their living rooms and begin watching them within minutes. “It will do for movies what iTunes has done for music,” said Michael Gartenberg (JupiterResearch).

Apple will offer about 1,000 movies, 100 of them in high-definition. The new service will also offer movies from all the major studios. That’s a big step, Apple has also tried to make Apple TV easier to use.

Apple faces more competition than it did when it launched the iPod. There is Sony, with its PlayStation 3 and Blu-ray disc players, and Comcast, which plans to offer 6,000 movies on demand each month, including more than 3,000 in high-definition.

Even the local Blockbuster has a larger selection of videos for rent than Apple, said John Barrett, director of research at Parks Associates, a market research firm focused on emerging technologies. And instead of worrying about a movie expiring within a day of starting to watch it, as with iTunes, Netflix customers can hang on to movies rented from its service for practically as long as they like, Barret added.

Should Apple’s product prove popular, cable providers are likely to start integrating similar features into their set-top boxes.

Summary

It is likely that at least 3 main players will emerge over the next 5 years. It’s a good bet that Microsoft and Apple will be competitive.

Since the product life of this type of system is 5-8 years, if you are in the market now, you can judge the winners on your next purchase. There will always be rationales for waiting. If you are building a World Class Home Theater, procrastination is not an option.

How to Own in Gears of War

Are you tired of being called a noob on Gears of War. Well, this article will change all that.

Steps

  1. Learn the slang:

    • NOOB is a new player. Or anyone that uses actual “game slang.” Game slang is considered dumb, pointless, and only shows that you are trying to pretend you are an actual gamer.
    • PWNR is a good player.
    • TK is when you kill a team mate.
  2. Play ranked matches only. player matches are too easy and you do not get points.
  3. Don’t team kill, spawn kill, or take a kill. These will all be frowned upon.
  4. Play with the host; the host always has the advantage.
  5. Use the shotgun the most: easy kills and easy aiming.
  6. Use the roll and cover features a lot. This will be very helpful, as it is better to not be killed first.
  7. Don’t trash talk unless you know you got it.
  8. Use active reload, which is the thing in the top right corner. When you load and you hit the white, you get more damage.(Down people with sniper above the waist in one shot)
  9. Play with a team that communicates.
  10. Do not complain or make excuses if you die.
  11. Play the campaign before playing online multiplayer!. The last thing you need happening is you asking your teammates what an active reload is! Learn the basics and try to beat it on Hardcore difficulty before going online. Playing Coop is a good idea too.
  12. Learn the maps! You need to know certain flank routes, where the good guns are, and where to find good cover. A good way to accomplish this is to play player matches with friends from school. Ask them to give you a few pointers if they’ve had the game longer than you. But just keep playing and playing and you’ll learn almost everything about the maps.
  13. Don’t overdo the whole awesome chainsaw thing. It might be easy as heck in campaign, but online you get blasted away if you try it. Try to do it from behind an enemy for your best bet. Remember Chainsaw VS any gun…any gun wins (from the front)!
  14. The shotgun is your savior! Pull it out when you see an enemy that is in close range. The roll and shoot method is a very good method to use with the shotgun. Aiming is good, unless you are 3 centimeters from the enemy. Never trade your shotgun for any weapon.
  15. Revives are good but…your main priority is the kill. If a teammate is down in front of you, use him as live bait! Wait for the enemy to come close for the kill, and BOOM blast him away with the shotgun! Then revive him if you have the chance. Kills are worth more than revives in points.
  16. Start playing ranked matches and try to get some achievements with the different guns. You may suck with a Torque Bow at first, but 100 kills later, you might love it. Always accept new methods and ideas your friends come up with.
  17. Take cover. The last thing you want is a sniper hitting you in the face. Always have cover available within a few feet in case someone begins unloading in your direction. Its a good idea to blind fire from cover when someone is rushing you. This should kill them without exposing yourself.
  18. Rush the guns. Go as fast as you can to the big guns on the map. Getting them is a huge advantage in most cases. Watch out for the opposite team. They could have the same idea.
  19. Coordinate. Talk with your teammates. Tell them where you are going and try to come up with a plan. Always designate one person to watch the rear. Try to outmaneuver your opponent with pincer moves and flanking.
  20. Roll when under fire. This is a great way not to end up with a cap in your back. Roll away and to the sides of incoming fire.
  21. Use the shotgun when you are close, and use the assault rifle from a distance.
  22. Don’t use the chainsaw on people head on; it’s just too slow. Only use it if you are surprising someone.
  23. Aim at a person’s head when sniping. Sometimes if you shoot your enemy in the stomach, it will down them, but don’t depend on that. Most of the time if you hit anywhere other then the head your target will just roll into cover and regenerate their health.
  24. Use frags correctly. Melee with an equipped frag to “tag” someone. They will then blow up. Don’t forget to dive out of the way so you don’t die with them!
  25. Empty clips if it will get the perfect reload. Better bullets give you an advantage over other people if they do not have the prefect reload.
  26. Use the pistol in certain situations. Aim at the head, and you can get a headshot. But when things get up close, it is a very effective melee weapon! Melee someone twice and they will drop to their knees. (Shoot them twice then melee for an even easier down!) Don’t forget that after you melee someone, theres a split second that they won’t be able to shoot. Usually the pistol is most effective at mid to close range.
  27. Revive your teammate if they’re dead! Just stop what you are doing and help your teammate. Not only will they be very thankful, but they also might return the favor in a later round.
  28. Know the levels that you are playing. It may seem obvious, but knowing where every single weapon is definitely gives you an advantage over those who don’t.

Tips

  • Play the story mode first, and beat it on all the modes.
  • Do not glitch.
  • Do not ask how to glitch.
  • Communicate with your team.
  • Speak English
  • Melee with pistol. Its good, 2 hits and they are down.
  • Try to use an HDTV, you see a lot better
  • Try to distinguish Locust from COG, it is super hard when you first start playing.
  • Play good or hard.Dont go easy on people. Its a also a way to win.
  • Have some fun along the way.Dont get mad when you lose or die.
  • Don’t be a jerk. You will find many people who are just total pricks on xbox live. Try to ignore them, because making worthless threats over xbox live makes you look like an idiot and really does not do much.
  • The last few bullets in your clip let off a clicking sound, that way you should be able to know whether or not you desperately need to reload.
  • There’s a good weapon hiding in the BoomShot, but it requires a little practice. The blast radius is not as big as you would think, but if you hit someone with a BoomShot then they die instantly. Using the BoomShot from far away requires luck more then anything since it can be pretty inaccurate. A good technique is to have a teammate distract the enemy from one direction while you approach from another and blow them up while they’re busy. This works best on the map “Mansion” because of its symmetrical design which allows insane flanks, especially when your enemies are clustered close together upstairs by the sniper rifle.
  • If you find that it is taking way too many shots with the shotgun to kill someone, then you are too far away from your enemy. Try using the pistol so you can still shoot effectively but you can also melée if an enemy gets near you.
  • With the sniper rifle, always aim at the head, an occational active is acceptable but exessive use is frowned upon online.

Warnings

  • Do not do things stupid like spawn kill…Like we all said..Play fair
  • Take breaks from playing every now and then.
  • Don’t trash talk or be cocky or you might be banned form Xbox Live.
  • If you have seizures, ask a doctor before playing.
  • Don’t respond to negative beahaviour. If they call you inapropriate names just ignore then and carry on enjoying the game.

Things You’ll Need

  • XBox 360 or COMPUTER
  • Gears of War CD/Game
  • 1 or more XBox 360 controllers
  • 1 Xbox or Xbox 360 Headset
  • HDTV or a TV
  • Maybe some friends could help
  • Patience
  • Be realaxed and have fun!

Got this kit to wall-mount a Yamaha YSP-900 sound bar. Our installer had it up and mounted with no fuss. Very solidly built, and reassuringly solid metal mounting plates for the base and the speaker.
Order arrived quickly and in good shape. We’d use this vendor again.

Quality, reliable product. A bit pricey but quality shines through. Fortunately the Japanese and Germans still value customer service and satisfaction - a rare commodity to find these days in a nation of arbitrageurs.

How to Improve Image Quality on an LCD Monitor

One method to improve the display on an LCD monitor is to use a DVI connector on a DVI capable video card. This is due to the fact that LCD monitors use digital connections, and the old VGA connectors are analog, so the VGA signal is converted from analog to digital (but this conversion loses image quality).
The other way is to ensure your video card is set to the LCD Monitor’s optimal resolution, typically 1280×1024 for a non-widescreen 17 or 19 inch monitor.

Steps

  1. Verify that your video card and LCD montior have DVI connectors. It is typically a white rectangular connector with holes for pins and a thin slot.
  2. Buy a DVI Male-to-Male connector from your local electronics store. Typically 3 to 6 feet long will do. (The DVI Male-to-Female connector is just to extend an existing cable).
  3. Plug one end into the video card DVI connector and the other into the LCD monitor DVI connector.
  4. Turn on your LCD Monitor and PC.
  5. Read your LCD monitor manual to see what you need to do to set the monitor to read the DVI input. Generally it is typically a button on the front that chooses input. Press it until you see a signal.
  6. You will probably need to set the resolution on the PC to match the optimal rate of the monitor (which should be stated in the Monitor manual).
  7. In Windows XP, just right click on a clear part of the desktop and click Properties to bring up the Display window.
  8. Click the Settings tab at the top.
  9. Drag the slider in the “screen resolution” field right to set the resolution to the highest setting.
  10. Click OK and then the LCD monitor will start using that new resolution. (If it asks whether you want to keep the new resolution, click Yes) You’ll notice items like text fonts and pictures look a thousand times sharper when shown at the optimal resolution of your LCD monitor especially with a DVI cable.

Tips

  • You can also put the refresh rate higher by going into “advanced” in the “settings” menu.
  • Read the manual that came with the LCD monitor, it should have this information listed.
  • Go to you graphics card manufacturer’s web site and download the latest drivers.

Warnings

  • This method works with DVI capable video cards. You can still use your old VGA connector with a VGA capable LCD monitor but the image won’t look as good. With either connector just remember to set the resolution to whatever is optimal for the monitor.

Things You’ll Need

  • DVI Male-to-Male connector
  • DVI capable LCD monitor
  • DVI capable video card
  • Your LCD monitor manual

Thought HDTV is All About LCD and Plasma - Well Checkout the Tube HDTV

Thought HDTV is All About LCD and Plasma - Well Checkout the Tube HDTV
By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Geetika_Sachdeva]Geetika Sachdeva

The concept of the Tube HDTV might seem to be something new to you, but actually these are the same as the standard TVs. There is only a bit of technical difference among them. This Tube HDTV is also known as Direct View TV.

The Tube HDTV is said to be Direct View because it is a television where the projection technologies are not used. The cathode-ray tubes have been replaced by glass and that is the factor which makes these TVs to be called as Tube HDTV. With the increase in size, the depth in the screen also changes.

The traditional tubes used to be very heavy and occupied a lot of space. The answer to this problem is the Tube HDTV. It has a direct view and is quite slim cutting down to around 30 percent. They offer great picture quality, and is accompanied by an inbuilt HDTV tuner that is used for receiving the over the air HDTV signals. Generally, it has a 1920 x 1080i display format. It is also often accompanied by a NTSC or ATSC tuner.

The HDTV’s are perfect in the world of electronics today as they give out high quality sound and visuals. Day by day the development in the televisions is taking place very rapidly and that is leading to a revolution in the world of entertainment. One characteristic feature of the Tube HDTV is that these are very heavy to carry. The more it is big in size, the heavier it becomes. This is the single issue that is making this Tube HDTV lagging behind the other brands.

Going for a high end Tube HDTV is far better as these are brilliant in offering the audiences with beautiful pictures. These cathode ray TVs are a grand master in displaying the color black and this gives everything a mildness and great format. From any angle, you can find the picture quality as good as watching it right from the front. Therefore, no matter where you sit, it is sure that you will be provided with the same picture as with the others.

The latest developments that are taking place in the field of the Tube HDTV are the thin tubes, Digital vs. Analog, Wide screen vs. Standard Screen and Flat vs. curved screen. These are the coming changes in the field of the Tube HDTV apart from which even many more changes are ready to enter the television arena.

Toshiba, LG, Panasonic, Samsung, Philips etc are certain well known brands that design Tube HDTV and have been successful in it too. Many people who have opted for the Tube HDTV are very happy at their decision that they took years ago. People praising these TV sets will be found in almost every part of the world as they are proud to be the owner of such a stylish and friendly Tube HDTV.

Philips AmbiSound Home Theater Sound Bar with Integrated 1080p-Upscaling DVD/MP3 PlayerSometimes the quest for home surround sound is as ignominious as seeking the holy grail. Where do you place all those speakers? Do you have to reshape the room? Philips engineers have tackled that problem. They’ve managed to take the output from 5 distinct channel amplifiers and placed them in a single speaker called a Soundbar. Within the soundbar, speakers are angled to provide a realistic audio environment that literally emulates sound as if it’s coming from all sides. It’s 5.1 surround without the mess! In addition to the latest audio technology, the Ambisound system is only five inches thick and can be easily mounted onto a wall underneath an existing Flat-TV. The simple, yet elegant design enhances the décor of any home theater space, regardless of the room layout or design. The center console is designed to be mounted on a wall or resting on a stand.
For maximum audio quality and clarity, the Ambisound system features a 3-band equalizer and DoubleBASS deep bass performance, creating a smooth cross over between sounds. The speakers feature soft dome tweeters for increased clarity and clear voice performance and are designed for maximum efficiency for full midrange performance. Additionally, users will enjoy the Smart Surround feature, which automatically ensures correct surround sound settings whether a movie or music is playing. Though not exactly 5.1 channel sound, The HTS8100 uses a host of technologies including array processing, precise driver positioning and psycho-acoustic innovation to achieve the full surround sound performance that is 5.1 channel compatible. A Great Sound Bar by Fraser Veitch
To start, I have to say that this sound bar deserves a 5 star rating for it’s look alone. The fact that Philip’s has managed to pack a DVD player into it, is pure genius. So then why am I giving it a 4 star rating? A few small things really (Intruth, I’d give it a 4.5 if Amazon allowed 1/2 stars).

Included in the box is almost everything you’ll need for the install. The only thing missing? - an audio cable to run from your TV back to the sound bar so you can listen to your TV through the sound bar (if you’re using a digital receiver/satelite receiver, you’ll need to supply the audio cable to run back to the subwoofer because all of the 5.1 decoding is done in the sub). Wall braket, HDMI cable, MP3 line-in, Ipod dock with video out cable and AM/FM receivers all included. Set-up shouldn’t take you more than a half hour.

Once installed, DVD performance was excellent. The upconverted image (720p for my TV) is great, and the audio is crisp & clear. The simulated surround sound is very good and the sound field created is wide enough that at times things seem to be happening around you. The bass from the sub is present, but there are times when you may wish you could turn it up (which you can’t - the sub’s output is fixed. All you can do is turn up the volume to the whole system). But let’s remember, this isn’t meant to be your home theater - this is better suited to dress up & enhance your living room.

Now, music reprodution is the systems flaw in my ears (ha). Admittedly, I’m a bit of an audiophile when it comes to music, so most people probably wouldn’t notice this, but music seems to be slightly muddled from the sound bar. I found there were times that I couldn’t make out the individual instruments on some songs. Having said that, for my own use I have found that it works great as a music player for dinner parties or when friends stop by for drinks.

There is one slight design flaw as well. The plug in for the Ipod dock is located on the side of the sound bar instead of the back. This placement makes hiding the dock cable virtually impossible. When I’m not using the dock I unplug the cable and tuck it in the mounting braket to maintain the clean look (I buried all the cables in the wall, so this is important to me)

Overall though, this is a great system at a great price.

No Optical In? by Harry P. Salamander
I was excited about this unit but ended up returning it when I discovered it has no optical input. Both of my HDTVs pass-thru sound via an optical output and that’s really what I wanted from a unit. Next time I’ll do a better job reading the specs!

Satisfied Customer by R. F. Hornak
My goal was to purchase a good quailty sound system without having to wire up 5 to seven speakers. I looked at Denon systems and Bose systems and decided on the Philips for price and the fact that I purchased a Philips 42 inch LCD TV and the Philips Ambisound mates up nicely with the TV.

Easy to wire. Easy to set up.

I was not expecting theater like surround sound experience from the Ambisound but this product comes close. I can turn up the volume and bass thru the subwoofer and drive the rest of the family out of the house with it. The sound quality is very good on TV, CD and DVD. The disc player works well and I like the the way the player cover slides open for disc loading. You can’t tell that there is a CD/DVD player in the speaker bar when the cover is closed.

The Ambisound looks good and the controls integrate nicely with the Philips TV it is hooked too. It comes with an iPod dock (this is an extra with the Denon system)so you can listen/watch to your iPod music/video library through it.

I am happy I purchased this product and would recommend it to anyone looking for a good quality two piece (speaker bar and subwoofer) system.

Video Noise in 1080p by ASG
Be careful buying this product if you expect to upconvert to 1080p resolution. There is a discussion thread concerning this in the discussion area so check it out. Essentially you get significant video noise in the form of green vertical lines in 1080p. Frankly, the more I read the more I suspect that most people simply haven’t tried 1080p and thus haven’t encountered this yet. Or they don’t have a 1080p capable TV. Could be wrong about that but I do know that Philips has their head in the sand when it comes to this problem and their customer service (if you can even call it that) is horrible. Too bad because the unit is a good idea, looks great, and otherwise functions as advertised. I’d wait until another company with a clue comes out with something similar in Blue Ray.

Good subwoofer, but not much of a Surround experience by Philipp
The Surround sound experience is somewhat ambiguous, there are moments during a movie where you are indeed tricked into thinking you are hearing sound effects from the side or behind, but 90% of the time you won’t.
In addition, just having one digital input (and co-ax!) seems a bit outdated to me. And what’s the idea behind having it in the subwoofer rather than the main bar, where all the other plugs are?

However, the set-up is really easy and I don’t miss all the wires my previous 5.1-system had at all! And the design is very sleek, too.

All in all, you get an audio system that is much less “invasive” in your living room, but you pay with a fairly limited Surround experience.

LCD TV Or Plasma TV Picture Trouble? What Causes Solarization and Picture Problems? How to Fix It
By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=James_V_Palmer]James V Palmer

Solarization.

It’s a much more common problem than many think. So, what does it look like?

There are many symptoms of this strange ailment but the most common are:

Faces on screen are blotchy as if sunburned, or a brown yellowish glow on the shiny areas.

Bright areas on the screen are tinged with a light yellow or brown.

Solarization: A phenomenon in photography in which the image recorded on a negative or on a photographic print is wholly or partially reversed in tone. (From Wikipedia)

Look at a color junk mail or color newspaper ad.

Look for an ad that shows a “sunburned” or sunburned effect on the persons face.

This is what you are looking for, the solarizing effect is very noticeable on faces.

The problem can be resolved if you get a Firmware Update for your LCD HDTV or Plasma HDTV

A firmware update is a microcode update for the chips inside your set.

You will need to contact your supplier or manufacturer for this update.

And you may need to contact their service agent for this, sometimes it is complex, and this depends on the brand.

As an example however, if you have a Samsung LCD HDTV or Plasma, certain models can be updated yourself!

What happens is that Samsung will send you a USB key with the firmware on it, and following the instructions:

You will be able to flash it or update it yourself!

Unfortunately, this does not always fix the solarization problem, but it is definitely worth a try.

Sometimes it is the fault of the station or network transmitting sub standard programming… Quality control?

Once it is updated, you can be sure that your set is working as well as it can…

Something you may be able to do if you have not yet bought a LCD HDTV or that Bargain Cheap LCD TV , is simply don’t buy a set that exhibits this problem.

How?

One quick way to check the quality of an LCD display panel:

Walk up to a set that is on display, stand up very close to it and look directly down or up at the screen

A good quality display panel will not change much, you won’t see any change in the quality of the image.

Cheap LCD TV sets with a lcd display panel that is prone to solarization, will look negative where the bright sections of the picture go darker, and the dark sections go brighter.

Or it will just lose color and picture quality.

… If you really want to buy a cheap lcd tv, leave it there and keep looking, good ones are out there ….

Unfortunately with Plasma HDTV, it is more complex.

You will have to try a firmware update to resolve the problem.

And it may involve a call to your local Plasma and LCD service center.

Remember to quote your Brand and Model Number, these details are on the back of the set on a sticker.

And your date of purchase if the TV is under warranty.

And it will help also if you Google it.

You will be surprised how many hits you get on a particular brand and model.

Why haven’t HDTV buyers been told these facts?
